STAGE 5
The long day is over and im totally busted right now. but i do really not care at the moment, as i think i have been lucky again and won another race. i mean its not over yet with still have 15km to go on saturday, but with a 40mins lead to second placed martin and a bit over an hr to 3rd placed Darren, i hope its home :-), but lets see on saturday....
Anyways, i was feeling pretty good this morning, despirte 6hr of NOT good sleep and was a bit keen to win this stage.... the first 15km was tough the salt flats and i was going in a good pace, if i should say it myself, haha :-), but suddenlyi made a big crash and it could have been very bad, but lucky i only got a few bruises. i got a pretty good lead until cp3, despirte i ran the wrong way two times, bummer! after cp 3, my eyes started to work against me and i have to stop up at almost every flag to look for the next and then Darren and Eric caught up with me, there were flying out there to day, amazing to see! i got pretty upset and demotivated as i lost my lead, and it was solely my fault.... we had to climb a nasty dune between cp3 and cp4, that was awful, dammit it was tough.... i was going along with eric and darren to cp 5 whereafter Darren took off in an amazing pace, it was like he was flying, so crazy! eric fell behind and i was number two... the terrain was okay but there was a lot of soft sand so we had to work a bit.... after cp5 it was a pretty flat road, and managed to keep an okay pace, while Darren flew are and suddenly looked very tiny! after the last cp i found it very hard hard hill climbing, soft sand in a never ending river bed and to big sand dunes to climb..... it was so tough and i was nearly dead in the end, when my good friend and competitor from Sahara Ryan Bennett came across in a van (he is volunteering for this event) and said over there we're 5 mins to camp, so i sped up and came in 15mins after Darren. i must admit im a bit disappointed, as i felt good right from the start, but messed it up myself....Anyways, i must admit that i lost to a much better man today - Darran was really flying and i can only congrats him with an amazing and well deserved stage win.....
feeling a bit wretched right now but im sure that ill be in better mood tmrw, when i get some rest....
I would like to thank a lot of people.... i mean the race is not over and im not the winner yet, but something would have to go very wrong :-) and ill probably not get to a computer in the near future, so ill just send my regards now.....
first of all, thanks to my trainer the legendary Ray Zahab for making an awesome program for me, thanks a lot RAY - looking forward to see the next program when i get home...
secondly, thanks to my sponsor and best brokering house in Australia ENDEAVOUR SHIPBROKERS, you guys are awesome - anyways, discount on JL ships are over when i get back to work :-)
The last will go to to my lovely girlfriend Jeri, i think she is the greatest reason im going to take the trophy here in Atacama, with lovely and awesome support, thanks honey :-)
of course also a big thanks to all you guys and my family who have been following the race and supported me all the way, you a def a party of my victory - thanks a lot guys, you have been awesome!
...... hey paul /- telling me that the long stage was not bad, i dont know what to say - ohhh yes i do actually.... i would seriously do the long stage of either sahara or gobi twice in a row instead, HAHA :-D
see you!

Congrats!! You've made it through the whole darn thing (well plus one more day but I'd like to see anything stop you now...) @Cat below - does this mean we get another huge cake in the shape of Anders? This time with salt flats instead of pyramids? :D
Posted On: 10 Mar 2011 04:39 pm
BTW, sorry Anders for calling you Martin earlier - my mistake :)
(It's all the excitement)

Anni.
Posted On: 10 Mar 2011 12:39 pm
I like your strategy - leading from start to finish.
I don't want to wish you good luck, because that is not what you need. It is 100% your hard work getting you there.
It is great stuff following your win after win after win.
Keep on running Mr. AKJ!

Well done, Anders. You are running a phenomenal race! Following your progress with great interest and admiration. When you read this you will have just 10miles to go until a nice cold beer and a few weeks holiday! Best wishes from London, Charlie (mate of Ian Holdcroft, Tom Soper & Chris Gibson who might still catch you up?!)

Held og lykke med etapen i dag, jeg håber og tror på at du kan holde Martin fra førstepladsen som du har gjort de sidste par dage. Godt gået Anders.

Awesome time across the salt flats. I still have nightmares about them! The final leg on Saturday am has a small section of canyon and then it's a flat section into town.....go for sub 30! Luce
Posted On: 10 Mar 2011 06:42 am
Anders - awesome job mate your times are excellent - the Atacama terrain is the toughest by far. Hang in there on the long day and you'll get under the magice 30hrs....great to see you out there and just take it easy tomorrow - no need to hammer it early!

Hi Martin,
Been awesome to follow your race! Great posts! Thanks for sharing.
Putting your mind together to write the race reports every day after so hard runs only demonstrates how well you are doing! Reading "between the lines" you seem to be very much in control of the race and Martin is hanging on to you as much as you are hanging on to him! :)
Keep up the good job! Very best of luck on the long stage.

hello hello,
day 3 is done and dusted. it seems my insomina continues as i waking up at 1-2 am every night and cant fall a sleep again, not very good as i need the sleep.... i managed to fall half a sleep and woke again 6.10 am and felt a bit strange, didn't really want to eat anything, but got some of my oatmeal anyways, but not much..... it was very cold at the startline this morning and i nearly got there when the countdown started..... today was going to be the toughest day and it was not and easy day, let me say that, but i actually found yday a lot tougher.... we started out with the infamous salt flat for 4km, its kind of hard to describe, but it very technical running and is like running on coral but some of them are very soft and your feet will be sucked down and its very easy to get injuried and if you fall it can go very badly..... anyways, my plan was to to follow martin who is very close to me in the race and i thought that we should take it slow, as yday was also tough on him, but that was def not the case. it looks likes he is getting stronger day by day.... anyway, i managed to get a bit of a gap until cp 2 abt 19km out, then martin caught up with me, the terrain was relatively flat but with soft sand and hard pack sand, but def runable.... the next 10,5 was salt flat again, i expected martin to take it slow, but he gave it full speed, on this dangerous terrain, all i got do was to pray to god that i would not fall here..... i was actually feeling pretty good, but was very hungry, beacuse of the light breakfirst i had.... the last leg after cp 3 was a killer. It was abt 11,5km with soft sand and very sharp rocks and with an inclinement. The last 4km we had to climb 4 big sanddunes it was very tough and im pretty glad i took my "red bull e-shot" at cp 3, i thing that was got me though it and managed to hang in with martin. anyway, martin i crossed the finished line togther, so i guess you cant say that i took another stage victory.... tmrw is another long day abt 42,8km where the second last section is 14km of those salt flat, NOT GOOD and NOT FUN.... i dont know what the strategy is for tmrw, i will sleep on that, but hopefull it will be similar as today...
ill go and get some food not, so im over and out for now....
once again thanks for the support guys - you rock big time....

Saving your energy for last, eh? Well done Anders, for another impressive Stage. You are doing massively well and I read the updates with much relish. I hope you will get some sleep tonight and manage to get some food into you. You are getting stronger day by day, so stay strong! You know it is all a mental game after Day 3 - it's down to who is stronger in the head. You'll probably read this before the long day, so I want to wish you the very best for this epic day. As Linda Quirk used to say to me, DREAM BIG. Go, Anders! It's the home run! x

Hello everyone,
Yday day we arrived at the first camp 3200meter I was very excited abt the whole thing as I was soon time to test the last couple of months training. I was pretty nervous abt how cold it would get at night, as I only choose to take a very light jackets, sleeve shirt and a very thin sleeping pad, as I had to cut down on the weight of my backpack, owise I will be able to move fast enough to follow the others / result 7kg, which was 700grams more for than sahara. Anyways, it was that cold as expected, however I only sleep from 8.30 to 1.00 am, so my insomnia from has continued from sahara! The time went pretty fast anyways, it was soon time to start the race (have to say that before we start the race it was freezing)

Hola,
Its almost 2 weeks since i left Singapore to the advantage of San Pedro de Atacama in Chile.
I had a brief look at my travel plan which said 36hrs - at first glance i thought how am i gonna survive that? anyhow, managed to sleep most of the way and it all went pretty fast.
Next issue - to get all my stuff to and into Chile - Chile have very strict rules of importing foods etc and i learned from other competitors that the south american airline "LAN" do not have the best rating of getting your luggage to the destination. Anyways, to cut a long story short, it all went well and i got a pretty good start of my journey.
I checked in at my hostel here in San Pedro and i was ready to start my preparation for Atacama Crossing 2011.
San Pedro is a very small city and its really nice to stay here, but in my opinion, not for two weeks, especially not when you're trying to prepare for a race - the food is very unhealthy and its not very clean here, i already got a bit ill of the food the first day and its still not too good.
Anyways, i have been able to do my training and boy its tough here
